Krochma Font {Update}

Krochma font on paper

I am proud to present a brand new Khmer font. I named it, Krochma.

I inspired from a modern commercial font names Eurostile. However it couldn’t be done by follow all the identity of the font, because Cambodian characters are more complicated, so they look a bit different.

It takes 2 month to finish this art work in illustrator. Now it’s time to decide that it should be Khmer Unicode or legacy font code like Limon. Some of my friends prefer it to be legacy font code because it’s easy to use than Unicode. I didn’t decide yet. Perhaps I’ll do both.

However i still need some time to develop this art work to be a real font. Check this post often to get this font for your personal use.

————————- Update {19 June, 2007} ——————————–

As promise, i added more screen shoot of characters of Krochma font and characters of Eurostile font. Perhaps i still missed some rared characters in this screen shoot such as ឝ ឞ etc.. But they will exist in the real font for sure.

All character krochma

Develop in progress

Thanks for all previous comments and correct me :) I am still waiting for your suggestion and advice. Now i am still in progress of developing this font.

———————update 10 july 2007——————-

Problem with Unicode open type feature

I will release legacy font first because i have problem with Unicode complexity open type feature in Microsoft Volt. If someone knows how to deal with please help or sent me some useful information.

Designed and developed by Visay.

    Hello!

I like Khmer Unicode Font, it’s easy to use. I never use Legacy font long year ago! Khmer Unicode is also embed in Windows Vista out of the box, however you need Khmer Unicode 2.0.0.exe from Khmer OS team to be readable Khmer in Windows Vista. http://www.khmeros.info/drupal

I have one suggestion, please reduce the height of your new Khmer font to be equal to 26mm only. You need to save some space for Upper vowels as well as bottom vowel.

    Best regards,

    Rithy

    Great job, Visay!

As Rithy said, you should be more careful with the height of Khmer font.

    Good job, Visay!!
I think that ur font is good. if u create it as Khmer Unicode, it must be good.
i have some programs for creating khmer unicode, if u r interesting, please contact me.. :)

By the way, ur design is really good.
    thanks,

    Sophea Vann

  7. Hi, it is good to see more font being created by Cambodian. I really appreciate all your hardworking. By the way, when I’m reading your font name Krouchma (Lemon) it really borther me alittle bit with the existing font name (Limon). If it possible can you change it something else beside (Lemon). Just a suggestion!

Hi , First of all i would like to thanks to you all who have comments and advice for me. I really feel good that you guys like this font.

Good News: now i am starting to develop this art work for Khmer Unicode.

These are some responses to some advice:
1- About the height of this font that you see in the second screen short is comparing to lower case English characters. I want to show you what make this two font different . If i compare it with the upper case character it look perfectly. i’ll add some other screen short while i am developing this font.
2- I named this font “Krochma”, in Khmer ក្រូចឆ្មា not “krochma lemon”.I had idea to create this font while i was eating lemon. I wrote lemon just for translation purpose.

    Thanks all you guys.

Krochma is a good name and it is better if you can name it as “Khmer Krochma”. I request for this name because it will be easy to choose when I want to type or edit in Khmer font. We also have Khmer OS font family and PAN font family that names with the word “Khmer” such as Khmer OS System, Khmer Kompot,….

It’s just ma idea. The name is depend on you. You create it you can name it as you like. I agree for what you are naming.

    Thanks for ya good work.

    Regard,
    Boeun

BTW just out of curiosity, will this font be a bitmap or vector?

  11. I read your note at khmeros.info and came to visit your blog to see what else I could learn about your font.

Eurostile has long been one of my favorite fonts, especially in older days when screen resolution wasn’t so good on computers — it is very legible and I note that Krochma succeeds in translating this feature of Eurostile.

At khmeros.info, I requested that you include Western and IPA characters, which make a Khmer font much more usable for those of us who are learning Khmer — many applications restrict me to a single font and if there are no characters in the Basic Latin set, I can’t use such a font in that application.

Apart from Microsoft Word and OpenOffice.org Writer, I don’t know of any way to include English, Khmer and pronunciations in the same document unless the font contains all three of these Unicode sections.

I believe Krochma will receive wider use and exposure if you choose Unicode and if you give it the extra bit of flexibility that even the KhmerOS fonts lack.

Thanks for your beautiful font. Can’t wait to see the finished version and try it out.

PS: What program are you using to create your font?

  13. Rithy says:

    Hello!

Related to height of the font! I remind you that, you should make Khmer fit to Latin Small letter. because we always use it. As you said the height of your font is look nice and matching with the height of Latin Capital Letter, but normally we always use Latin Small letter not capital one!

That’s why I suggest you consider well about the height of the font! I personally think it have to be equal to Latin Small letter. As I know so far Khmer OS font family is too big height, make the fonts miss some part when use in the limit windows such as “Search Box”! This is the weak point of Khmer OS fonts.

However Khmer OS font family is great for print on the paper, but they are bad for showing on Computer Screen!

    Best regards,

    Rithy

I just add a image listing most characters of Krochma font and Eurostile font.

    Thanks for some advice above:
Mr Roger Sperberg, i have check all glyphs of khmeros font. i saw that they missed some Latin characters you have listing. I don’t know if i can add this glyphs correctly or not in my font, but i’ll try. For the moment i used khmeros font as a template for my font, so i need to be careful adding or deleting glyph.
I use FontLab studio 5.0.1 as a tool to develop this font and i am a newbie in this tool. Thanks.

Rithy, Thanks for your height of each characters advice. Actually my purpose of creating this font is to use for my design stuff (Printing) not for viewing on screen like khmeros font. To make a font clearly viewable on screen is pretty working-hard. We need to do a lot of hinting and it spends too much time. So for the moment i will keep the height of each character like khmeros font because i use khmeros font and release this font as soon as possible.

To all, Thanks for your comment. They are helpful

PS:I hope some of you will be my tester before i officially release this font. So if you’re interested and want to help me improve it, just say “you want to be a tester”, i’ll sent you the font to test first after i finish develop it immediately. We’ll keep it touch

Again, Thanks for helping me :)

  15. Rithy says:

    Ok!

For Printing, it’s no comment about the height, I can specific the height of Latin and Khmer to be deffer, to become matching! MS Word can do this!

MS Word I can set Arial 12pt for Latin Base, then I can set Khmer Krochma font 10pt.
    It’s alright. Great job!

I would like to be a tester! Please!

    Best regards,

    Rithy

  16. Rithy says:

    Hello VisaySeng!

The new screenshot shows Khmer number matching to Khmer consonance, The Latin shapes are pretty good for me, this Latin shape I ever use for drawing. Before we have to use ruler and pen to print it on the drawing, after now on I will can print it on paper by printer.

    Thanks to your innovation!

  18. I will gladly be one of your beta testers.

We need good fonts for both print and screen, and we can’t expect a single font to work brilliantly in every situation.

    Roger Sperberg

  19. I forgot to add that designing the two character sets together helps keep the stroke width the same — and the color* of the type the same — when a page contains both Western and Khmer text.

And the fit with the Eurostile characters from basic Latin looks really good!

    Roger

    * If you look at a page from across the room, the black of the type and the white of the background page form a shade of gray. Designers refer to that as the color. You can tweak the color by adding more leading or intercharacter spacing (which would lighten it). But for books, you’ll almost always choose a different font if the color doesn’t feel right and leave the tweaking for small adjustments.

Until now we have no screen font for Khmer. I appreciate if somebody can build it.

    Hi Visay,

This is the most beautiful khmer font i have ever seen. I am sick of the traditional fonts! I am an illustrator myself and i currently need a elegant khmer font like this for a logo. It would be great if you can send me a copy of it. Credits will be given to you:) Thank you in advance. My email is visothsal@gmail.com

Nice work, but I don’t like that. It’s a kind lazy style to Khmer letters. We have been working hard to unite and correct Khmer letters in 50s and 60s. If Chuon Nath saw it, you would be seriously blamed by him.

Of course, it’s ok for fun and stylish one. Anyway, your children will write like this when they see it more.

    Thanks
